PGS has developed the North West Shelf Digital Atlas (NWSDA), with technical support from Geoscience Australia, to promote the hydrocarbon potential of the North West Shelf, Australia.
The Digital Atlas concept was originally developed by PGS in the UK, in conjunction with their North Sea 3D MegaSurveys. There, working with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), all released petroleum information, especially horizon and well data, was utilised to create a digital library over the North Sea petroleum systems.
The Digital Atlas is now a proven concept best suited to areas where government released digital data is freely available. The North West Shelf is therefore a prime candidate for this type of project.
With support from Geoscience Australia and Industry, the NWSDA was compiled by PGS, in both their UK and Perth offices, in April 2005. Ongoing industry support and maintenance resulted in an updated version being released in December 2005 with a view to continued updating and adding more data as they become available.
To make the data as widely available as possible, a public domain version of the NWSDA has been prepared by PGS for hosting by Geoscience Australia. Regional 10 km grids and other data extracted from the full version of the NWSDA allow the user to explore the petroleum systems and hydrocarbon potential of the NWS Australia freely and in a user-friendly, web-based format.
Data available in this public domain version will aid users in all aspects of petroleum exploration, be they individuals with self interest, academics or companies looking for new venture opportunities.
